The refurbishment service involves a thorough disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly process.  The disassembly is straightforward; the carburetor is taken apart and prepared for the cleaning phase.  During the cleaning process, the carburetor is immersed in a cleaning solution and then into a degreaser.  Following the degreasing step, it’s placed into a media cabinet and blasted.  Afterward, the carburetor undergoes a gentle polishing in a tumbler.

 

Notably, carburetor companies like Rochester, Zenith, Stromberg, Aisan, Hitachi, and Autolite manufactured their units using zinc, aluminum, and cast iron.  That said, zinc-cast carburetors are immersed in a dichromate solution and coated with a protective layer to withstand the elements.  Cast iron carburetors undergo a magnesium phosphate chemical treatment, while aluminum units move from the tumbler to the rebuilder’s bench.

 

The rebuilder’s primary responsibility is to ensure the functionality of the carburetor.  It doesn’t require extensive knowledge to recognize a failing carburetor – high idle, rich running condition, and hard start.
